A Salute to WWII Heroes: Philippine Veterans Week 5-11 April 2016
Every 9th of April, we celebrate “Day of Valour” or “Araw ng Kagitingan” in memory of the heroism of the Filipino and American soldiers who fought against the Japanese Forces in World War II. Many of these soldiers died during the “Death March” on 09 April 1942. Therefore, during this national public holiday, we honour their sacrifices and heroism that brought freedom to this nation.
This holiday also commemorates the historical significance of Corregidor Island in Philippine history. Corregidor is an island found at the entrance of Manila Bay, southwestern part of Luzon Island. It is near Bataan and located in Cavite. This island’s location is strategic for the defence of Manila, thus it had several coastal artillery and ammunition. This was the key defence line against enemy warships. This is also known as the largest island that consisted the harbour defenses of Manila Bay. Corregidor Island is best remembered for its military function during the liberation of the Philippines from the Japanese.

This week, take time to get familiar with Philippine history and this nation’s role during WWII in partnership with United States and Australia. “The Fall of Bataan” on 9 April 1942 is one important chapter of the war in the Pacific. In other places in the Philippines, many Filipinos refused to surrender and secretly organised various guerrilla units to fight the Japanese. One of the youngest and earliest groups that was formed was the Hunters ROTC Guerrillas.
The film company Spyron-AV Manila presents the film showing of the award-winning “Unsurrendered 2 – The Hunters ROTC Guerrillas”. This is an inspirational story on how young college students bravely defied the Japanese rule, planned and headed successful rescue operations and more.
Here is their media release:
