Upmarket Shopping in Manila

Greenbelt 4, Makati City along Makati Avenue

Here in Manila, where can we find the popular imported brands or shops of luxury items like a Rolex watch, a Charriol bracelet or a Louis Vuitton bag? How about shoes by Christian Louboutin or Bruno Magli? Where can I buy Christian Dior and YSL perfumes? Is there a branch of Evita Peroni here for the latest fashionable headbands and hair clips from Denmark?

For the shopper who loves branded luxury items, Manila is a good place to find these treasures. There are many elegant and high-class malls within Metro Manila. Here is a list of five of the best, frequently visited and easily accessible shopping centres particularly in Makati and Taguig area. The list also includes some of best, high-class shops that one can find in that particular mall.

1. Power Plant Mall

“Power Plant Mall. Where Fashionable Manila shops.”

Power Plant Mall is conveniently located just beside Ateneo Law School and Ateneo Business School in Makati. The mall is surrounded by many high-rise buildings like the office location of Asian Eye Institute, Nestle and offices of other famous companies. There are also first class condominiums within the vicinity. I remember back in the ‘70s, this area has a thermal power plant named “Rockwell”, notorious among Makati residents for its giant furnaces that emit black soot. It was such a serious environmental and health problem in those days. This thermal plant was operated by Manila Electric Railroad and Light Company. The plant was closed in 1994. Prior to this, in 1998 the area’s renovation was started in order to transform it into a high-class shopping center and an opulent address for the elite people of Makati. It was also a sophisticated place to work and study. They also retained the named “Rockwell” in honour of James Rockwell, the first president of MERALCO.

These days, when you hear the name “Rockwell”, people no longer remember the soot-emitting power plant, but rather the name now pertains to one of the most beautiful places in Makati. It is a great place to work, study, shop or even jog in the morning or at night. The air is clean too with their beautiful green landscape, contrary to the Rockwell that Makati residents knew decades ago.

Years before Makati was even established as a city, Greenbelt Park was famous not only for their cinemas but also for their forest-like park in the middle of metropolis. In the ‘80s, they had a giant bird aviary where one can take a stroll in this wide garden together with several tropical bird species. (Imagine yourself stepping inside a giant bird cage with paradise-like landscape of plants, flowers and trees.) It was a good venue for art contests and a nice place to unwind and relax with nature. Today, Greenbelt retains their status of high-standard city life. It is one of the first-class malls that caters to the lifestyle of the city’s young urban professionals. They have a three-hectare park with beautiful landscapes and water features. An artistic, open-air, dome-like chapel is located at the centre of the park. This chapel is dedicated to the busy working people of Makati. Beside the park is a walkway to prominent world-class retailers. Greenbelt Park offers to shoppers the best of the Ayala Malls.

Location: Taguig City

Address: Bonifacio Global City, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City

Developer: Fort Bonifacio Development Corp. in partnership with Ayala Land, Inc., Evergreen Holdings, Inc. and Bases Conversion Development Authority

Bonifacio Global City (BGC) was originally a portion of the multi-hectare military base run by the United States government in 1902. It was later named “Fort McKinley” after US President William McKinley. Fort McKinley was eventually turned over to the Philippine government in 1949. Then in 1957, it became the permanent home of the Philippine Army and renamed “Fort Bonifacio” in honour of Philippine revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio. Now, BGC is made urbanised and more commercial, but still retaining some portions for the military. Bonifacio Global City has other names like “The Fort” or “The Global City”.

The Bonifacio High Street mall is the part of BGC that presents a wide variety of high-class shops of popular brands abroad. The place also caters to the elite in the country, particularly the urban professionals and expats who live an active health-conscious lifestyle. Since the mall area is open, it is also a good, wide place to jog around early in the morning or even at night. In the future, the place will have a multifaceted water plaza, garden islands and more art installations. It is like shopping with a park and art museum all in one. It is a refreshing and energising shopping experience that beats the stressful city living.
