Sinulog Festival (January 20-27, 2013)

From the province of Cebu comes the grandest, most distinguished and ever colorful cultural event in the Philippines which has been commercially regarded just recently as a tourist attraction, the “Sinulog Festival.”  It is held annually on the third Sunday of January which will fall on the 20th of 2013. What to expect for this year are another round of numerous and exciting activities and some of them are scheduled  as early as December 1st.

“Sinulog” is a ceremony, in the form of a dance, that gives respect and honor to the miraculous image of the Santo Niño or the Child Jesus, who was the former patron saint in the province of Cebu, but for the Catholics, Jesus is regarded as a god, not a saint. The dance also commemorates the Filipinos’ paganism in the past until the time of their recognition and acceptance of Christianity as a religion.

The Cebuano dialect, “sulog,” which is the origin of the word “Sinulog” refers to the motion of water wherein the flowing movement is compared to the “Sinulog” dance which is one of the main features in the festival.

Considered a big event is the ‘Fluvial Procession’ where the image of the Santo Niño is being  journeyed in the different parishes within the city of Cebu. This serves as visits of Santo Niño to His Parents. The procession starts in the Basilica in Cebu City, the usual house of  Santo Niño, and will, then travel to the Saint Joseph Parish located just nearby Mandaue City.

The Santo Niño will spend a few days with His foster Parents before the main event. The Santo Niño’s stay in the church will give chance to the people, especially those living afar, to pay homage and perform vigils as part of the ritual. There is a belief that vigils and prayer requests done at this point have a high possibility of being answered.

Then the image is transferred to one of the islands of Lapu-Lapu as a visit to His mother. At this point, the image is being traveled between locations at the earliest time in the morning. During His travel in the shore aboard either a galleon or a huge boat, the image is placed inside a glass case completely adorned with flowers. This is a re-enactment of the Spaniards arrival on the shores of Cebu. Following them are smaller boats with the accompaniment of beating drums, and the loud sounds coming from the trumpets, horns and sirens along with the grand fireworks including the cries and petitions of the devotees aboard the boats.

Recently added in the procession is the showering of petals of flowers coming from the sky using helicopters as provided by the Mactan Air Base. The journey ends at the Cebu City Wharf, then the Santo Niño will be brought back to His home, the Basilica. In the concluding part, there will be  a re-enactment of Christianization of the pagan residents.

Another traditional event in the festival is the much-awaited displays of ceremony (in the form of a very long parade) and pageantry with participants attired in brightly colored costumes as they perform the rhythmic dance, “Sinulog,” to the tune of drums and native gongs.

Aside from the “Sinulog” dance, be mesmerized from the displays of different kinds of food in the stalls that are located along the streets plus the ever famous “Cebu lechon”. There are also several trade fairs to introduce quality export products including the world-famous dried mangoes and the indigenous goods consisting of hand-woven baskets and bags.
